Yep, the hobbyist variations of this language are still here and unlike GWBASIC they've upgraded to Windows without becoming a new environment like Visual BASIC. And they have object orientated programming features. OOPs!

There is no excaping the simplicity of english like commands and the hobbyist fun and if you are stuck with people who still want to teach this language. For those wanting to break through to freshman into a approachable manner, there is a new DUMMIES book with a CD packed with these evaluation copies of the following software. The book has C++ code in parallel with fun BASIC examples and a chapter on programming careers. Instead of a dry $90 survey textbook, here's a nice trade book with a 2007 copyright that sells. The book is "Begininng Programming for DUMMIES" and it is actually on store shelves now.

There is a nice chapter on web programming and javascript. With removable drives and drive imaging software the labs can be upgraded by www.robotecas.com The students recieve a CD that they can install in there computers after the second or third week that gets them through the course and into web programming, C/C++ and JAVA programming. I would use this method for the current situation I face. There is at least a complete reference for the students with C++ material.

 

For future direction my interest is teachine javascript and PHP as approachable and usable scripting languages students can use and see results with. With Python as the third. Python is supported by Google and it is considered a good starter language to get to Java.
